DIMENSION - DJ Producer goes Live

Dimension  decided transform his body of work as a D&B producer into a live show. Commisionning an ambitious workstation concept ‘show piece’ into an on-stage see through spectacle. The transparent workstation would allow complete control of the show’s audio and also trigger and sync the show’s video department situated at front of house.

Innovations

2 sleeves in one case, to save a extra box on the overall piece count, Gravity paired the 2U on-stage I/O sleeve into the same airport friendly peli case as the 3U off-stage switching sleeve.  2 x Cat6 cables in the multicore enabled the Ableton Link sync data to FOH via a much tested network switch, Midi data to FOH also was built into the design using a tried and tested system.

A tried and tested bullet proof design was used to host and convert all USB devices to 2 way din midi, enabling the USB controller to respond to Ableton.

To use the latest 2019 laptops (the apple T2 chip was bypassed)
To simulatneously control both A & B computers

DIMENSION - DJ Producer goes Live

Dimension  decided transform his body of work as a D&B producer into a live show. Commisionning an ambitious workstation concept ‘show piece’ into an on-stage see through spectacle. The transparent workstation would allow complete control of the show’s audio and also trigger and sync the show’s video department situated at front of house.

Innovations

Back on the Road

Back on the Road

The 2019 reprise of Keane, after a 9 year live show hiatus, the band approached with  requirements of a single flyable miniature rig ala Snow Patrol. 

We design and delivered an off stage dual A/B computer playback rig and a off stage dual A/B computer keyboard rig, these new systems are a fraction of the size the old system.

Airport Friendly Option

Featuring removable rack sleeves for conversion to airport friendly pelis, this is a full stadium rig that can go through an airport  with each case under 23kg. Having seen the ‘Disclosure’ rig, ‘Maluma’ approached Gravity in April ’18 for a major upgrade of their keyboard player/DJ’s playback and performance rig.

A Modular Plug & Play Package

Joe and Tom from Solomon Grey recruited Gravity to create the new playback and performance rig for the 2017 album ‘Human Music’.  

The key outcome here was to tame an ambitious and complex plan into a modular rack plug and play fly package, that had the resilience of dual A/B switching computers.

Innovations

The requirements set out in the briefing stage of this project were quite individual and the outcomes met all of these needs by working together and a few innovations along the way. 

Based around a very versatile 32 in/out Madi converter, with all sorts of functionality was included in it such as A/B switchable two way midi communication throughout the USB controllers.

Roadie Lego - Small Flexible Modular Racks

A Modular Plug & Play Package

Joe and Tom from Solomon Grey recruited Gravity to create the new playback and performance rig for the 2017 album ‘Human Music’.  

The key outcome here was to tame an ambitious and complex plan into a modular rack plug and play fly package, that had the resilience of dual A/B switching computers.

Innovations

The requirements set out in the briefing stage of this project were quite individual and the outcomes met all of these needs by working together and a few innovations along the way. 

Based around a very versatile 32 in/out Madi converter, with all sorts of functionality was included in it such as A/B switchable two way midi communication throughout the USB controllers.

Snow Patrol - Fly / Play / Control

After a 7 year gap from touring for the 2018 campaign for the album ‘Wildness’, the backline needed a radical overhaul.

Although a one line brief, this involved critical miniaturisation and weight reduction considerations.


A fresh ‘back to the drawing board’ approach was adopted, and a period of R&D lead to the success of this project, culminating in the playback rack shrinking from a freight only 22u rack to 2 x well protected lightweight sub 32kg airport friendly (wheelable!) cases.

The fly friendly design allowed the playback setup to fly to any location and therefore eliminate the need for a B system playback setup. This obviously saved £ in the long run on unnecessary equipment purchases. As well as meaning that setup could be achieved in any show location.

Design Innovations

A lightweight skeleton 4u rack housed in a sub 32kg peli.

The use of iConnectivity hardware was core to the miniaturisation of the rig and also allowed remote control of the playback setup from stage, control of the stage keyboard world from Ableton Live itself and the use of on stage autocue setup , driven by Ableton Live…. all using networking technology.

This eliminated the use of bulky multiple lined audio and MIDI looms and allowed the use of lightweight CAT technology to route audio/MIDI and control signals, saving on both volume and weight, both critical factors in tour freight costs.

The whole rig needed to be fly friendly and super portable.
